Back from Aussie

Aug 30, 2008 in New Zealand Actual

Hello again!   It’s been a while … apologies.   Weather is improving slowly so we’re starting to be able to venture out again at the weekend which is good.

Work has been a bit hectic … we’ve had a Technology reorg recently … new GM of IT who is currently “reviewing” the team.   There are a few worried people around and the contractors are getting worried if their contracts are coming up for renewal.   I was feeling like moving again before all this happened and the fact that most of the people I’ve been working with over the last year and a bit are contractors means that the people I like working with may not be there either.   Saying that, the project I talked about in an earlier post which has so much Exec visibility is getting me noticed … not sure if that’s a good thing or not though!   :o)   I need to give this some serious thought over the next week or so and make a decision on what I want from my working life and where I’ll get it ….

My weekend in Melbourne with Rona was great.   Flew over early on Friday morning, arrived at the Marriot where Rona had been staying for a couple of nights already and then went for lunch.   After lunch, we went shopping …. I didn’t buy too much but it was good wandering around somewhere different …   Went out for Greek food at night which was really nice.

Saturday we went to Victoria Market which is an outdoor market selling food, clothes and “stuff”.   We had brunch there and had a wander around … need to find something similar in Auckland as we’d buy all our food at a market like that if there was one.   Bought myself a natural opal necklace (ie still in the rock … not just a polished opal) but that was about it.   In the afternoon, we decided to go to the cinema … I haven’t been to the cinema for years and don’t really keep up with films so had no idea what any of the films were so let Rona choose.   Ended up watching “Wanted” with Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy.   If you ignore the violence (which you can’t) then it’s a really good film … had some good camera work.   When we were buying the tickets it said that this viewing was a “half pipe” … we had no idea what that meant so asked when we got to the ticket sales … turns out that it’s a cinema full of bean bags!!!!   Decided to give it a go .. Went in to a room full of very large bean bags so settled down on one to watch the film …   Realised very quickly that half pipes are meant for young couples but was okay and quite comfy actually.   Not sure I’d do it again though …   That night, we went for Japanese food which was lovely.

Sunday was relaxing … got up very slowly, packed and then went for brunch before heading back to the airport.   It was great seeing Rona again and managed to catch up on a year and half in two and a bit days .. Which isn’t bad going!   She’s talking about coming down to Auckland sometime soon as well which would be great!

Got home in time to see the kids as well which was good (thought they’d be in bed by the time I got home) … they even spoke to me … I remember the first time I was away from home when Kyle was Reggie’s age .. Took him about three days to even speak to me when I got back.

Kids are doing great … Reggie repeats everything you say now and has started counting (Kyle has been teaching her).   Her hair is sooooooooo curly now …    Kyle is doing great too and we’ve got a playdate planned with both Caylen and Righard at our house tomorrow … must be mad!!!!

Think that’s it for now … will blog much sooner the next time!

Storms no 2 and 3

Aug 04, 2008 in New Zealand Actual

As the post title suggests, we’ve had another couple of storms over the last week.   Although 2 and 3 weren’t as strong as 1, they actually hit us worse as they were coming from the north west rather than the south east ….   Because we are on the north facing slope of the valley, we didn’t feel the wind coming from the south .. It kind of went over our heads … literally.   Coming the other way, hit us head on so we actually saw/felt more of the last two …   Hopefully there won’t be any more for a while …

All okay last week … my work was a lot busier than it has been for the last couple of months … was beginning to enjoy the rest …. No more!   Micro marketing itself is getting a lot busier with one of the projects in particular being very high visibility and having Exec sponsorship.   Was also covering for one of the PMs in web & online who was off with a sick baby so it was good to get back into that for a while.

Talking of which … my Programme Manager is moving programmes and taking me with him so as of next Monday, I will no longer have anything to do with web & online and will be moving to products and services …. But taking my micro marketing projects with me.   I move around a lot … don’t I??   It’s strange since I stayed with my VF clients in CVG for years … and this is the third programme I’ve been on in just over a year!   Feels a bit weird …

Kyle and Reggie still doing well …. As is Bobby.   Met up with Katie, Caylen and Danelle (Caylen’s little sister) at the local softplay on Sunday so Kyle was a happy boy.   Other than that a quiet weekend.

Getting ready for my weekend in Melbourne … now have a visa to get into Australia and I think I have a visa to get back into NZ …   Read up the immigration website which suggested to me that my returning residents visa for NZ was valid for two years from date of issue.   Now because we didn’t come across until a year after issue and we’ve been here over a year, my assumption was that my RRV had run out.   Spent last night finding all the documentation required and then walked to the other end of the city IN THE RAIN this morning (without a hood) … got soaked … only to be told that it is valid from the date my residency was granted which means I have another year on it.   Great that I don’t have to cough up $140 for a years worth of RRV … but not good that I got soaked and had to walk around in a state of very bad hair for the rest of the day …

This one is purely for my family … no-one else will get it … was watching the TV the other night and an advert that I’d never seen came on …. Without going into details the punch line is all about a guy talking about something having a nice shiny coat!!   Reminded me of my big bruv and made me smile! :o)
