The Haircut

Jun 30, 2007 in New Zealand Actual

The big day finally arrived … the new hairdresser! Arrived a couple of minutes late but realised quite quickly that they were running quite late so sat reading. My hairdresser came over and we chatted about what I wanted for a while, she got really quite excited about colours etc which was quite nice. Anyway, the colour went on and it was Kyle’s turn (Oh, Oh). Didn’t go well to start …. dad had to take him outside “for a chat” … but he came back in and sat on the chair on his own (that’s a first) and let her cut his hair. After a while, he started to get a bit grumpy so she gave him the water squirter and told him to spray the mirror in front of him and they could draw pictures!! The place was soaking by the end but his hair was cut and it’s a really good cut. My colour is really nice, she dried it really straight … which I’m not sure about … but overall, it’s really nice. So much so, that I’ve made another appointment in six weeks.

Bobby seems to be enjoying the new job … it’s much smaller than the RBS but most places are in NZ so it’s something we both have to get used to. My job is going well but I’ve realised that being a PM in NZ isn’t too much different to being a PM in the UK … you still have to put up with the same problems and politics!! Nice view of the harbour sometimes isn’t enough to keep the frustrations at bay ….

Regan is having some teething problems at the moment … she gets really grumpy sometimes because her gums are obviously really sore. Her face is quite a picture though when you apply the Bonjela!

My Son, the Kiwi

Happy Birthday to me!!

Kyle brought me my cards from him and Regan this morning along with my present (a monopod). He’d drawn me a picture of a beanstalk and (with help from daddy) he’d written his name in the card which was really nice.

Today’s commute went alot better … got to work at 7.45 so not bad at all. My day wasn’t too bad but don’t like being at work on my birthday .. will need to take a holiday next year! Obviously since we were both working, we didn’t go out or anything for my birthday but we had a nice dinner at home. Finally tried out “The Cheesecake Shop” … yum!

We were talking to Kyle about his day while we were eating and asking him who he’d been playing with .. up until now he’s never been able to remember all of his new friends names. “Herrison and Erron” he says … strange names we thought until we realised he was actually saying Harrison and Aaron but in a kiwi accent!!! That didn’t take long … 2 months in the country and he’s already picking up the accent. I guess it’s not a bad thing as he’ll fit in a lot better that way .. especially when he goes to school.

All the best laid plans …

Bobby and I had everything worked out for this morning … who would do what, when so that I could get to work at 7.30 and he could drop the kids off. Everything was going well right up until I joined the motorway. I have mentioned the North Shore commute before in a post but having driven it now for a few weeks I’ve got a better understanding of exactly what it’s like. Browns Bay is around 20km from the CBD, I have a couple of kilometres to get to the motorway from home and then almost all of the rest is motorway. The first few kilometres of the motorway is usually quite free and then it’s nose to tail going quite slow for the rest of the way. Each way normally takes between 30 to 45 minutes.

This morning I joined the motorway to a queue … hmm I thought, that’s a bit unusual …. half an hour later and a few feet further on, I realised that something was very wrong. It took me about 45 minutes to get to the next junction after the one I join on and I pulled off half expecting the other routes into town to be very busy with people avoiding the motorway. Not so … roads were empty as everyone was on the motorway! Got down to Takapuna quite quickly but then met the queue of Takapuna people trying to get onto the motorway so sat there for another half hour. By the time I got to VF, it was 8.30 and I was an hour late!! Meant I had to work right through lunch so that I could still leave at 4.30 to pick up the kids before the nursery shut. Not a good start to the day.

Bobby’s first day went well … if you want to know more click on the link to his blog which he’s now started and he’ll tell you more!

Kyle had fun at nursery today as they had a leaving party for Connor who’s off to school … have I mentioned before that kids go to school the day after their 5th birthday here?? They don’t wait for the next intake they just start the next day. Anyhoo, Connor left today which is not good as he was one of Kyle’s friends … he’s okay about it but says that he’ll miss Connor. Any other time it’d be fine but because he’s just joined and Connor was his first friend at “Pre-school 2″ I think it’ll hit Kyle more this time.

“Pre School 2″ is in quotes by the way as any time I say nursery or pre school now I’m told … no mummy, I go to preschool 2 … preschool 1 is for smaller boys and girls! OK Kyle!

Anyway, must go and get everything ready for tomorrow … here’s hoping that tomorrow morning goes slightly better.

New Car

Jun 22, 2007 in New Zealand Actual

Been a little while since I’ve updated the blog … trying to get used to this work thing again! Job is going well … now into the swing of it again. Role is more of an infrastructure PM than my old job in Convergys so it’s quite interesting to get involved in the Operations side of telecoms (network performance etc) along with the hardware and infrastructure design around it. Must admit though, I’ve had to come home a couple of times and ask Bobby for explanation of what this LAN or that LAN is …. just as well he’s here really! I’m sure I’ll get used to it all eventually. The technical guys at VF are happy to stop and explain when I start to look a bit confused … they just appreciate the fact that they don’t have to explain the basics of mobile phones/switches etc to me.I have four projects at the moment (although my boss did come up and ask me if I needed anymore today …) so just trying to figure out where they all are as I didn’t get a handover when I started as the last PM had left in a bit of a hurry when she’d gone into labour 9 weeks early in the middle of the office!! Anyway, I’m enjoying the work, the people are really nice and as is the norm with VF, the offices are lovely.

Bobby is due to start his job next week … I think he’s looking forward to it as he’s a bit fed up being a house husband! As those of you who are closest to us know, Bobby and house husband type duties don’t really go …. Although to be fair, he’s managed to unpack all of the boxes from Pickfords and put most of it away. Looks like there has only been one breakage … which isn’t bad considering how far it came …. so we’ll have to try to claim it back from Pickfords. It’s great having all our stuff around us again - makes it feel more like home rather than a holiday.

We’ve spent the last couple of weekends car hunting for me … after having done the commute for the last couple of weeks, we both agreed that an automatic was the way to go as we wouldn’t be able to afford to replace the number of clutches we’d go through with a manual. Manual cars are a bit of a rarity over here and it’s not surprising once you’ve driven into the CBD a couple of times …. Anyway, we test drove an Evo Automatic which was surprisingly very quick but (as Pamela used to say) it’s just wrong! Looked at Skylines, Preludes but settled on the Toyota Altezza so we started looking about for one that ticked all the boxes. Found an RS200 (2 litre saloon) at the other side of the CBD and went to test drive … wasn’t a pleasant experience as it kept cutting out and you can’t bump start an automatic! Took it back to the garage and the guy suggested that we look at the Altezza Gita which is a kind of estate (but much sleaker than a normal estate … looks more like a long hatchback). Took a 3 litre, 4WD out for a test drive and loved it … car was really easy to drive and was quick enough due to the 3 litre. So I am now the proud owner of a white Altezza Gita.

Been driving into town on my own since I got the car and am getting used to the different driving style down here … it’s legal to undertake so you can move about lanes as you like. Took a bit of getting used to but it’s actually much better as you can get passed the middle laners although because everyone drives automatics, there isn’t much space between cars when it’s busy so you have to be a bit cheeky sometimes! We’ve got to get a NZ driving licence before the first year is out so now need to sit my driving theory test so that I can get it … have the book … just need to read it! Should really do it anyway as they have some weird rules around turning right when the person coming towards you is going the same way and I’m still not very sure what I’m supposed to be doing.

There is a bend in the motorway just before the Harbour Bridge and as you come around it, you get a perfect picture of the CBD with the Sky Tower and the Harbour Bridge surrounded by the water and boats and every morning as I come round the bend, I think wow … do I really live here?? It’s a lovely city and it’s great to be here!!

Kyle and Regan are still doing great … Regan has learned to giggle and giggles non stop at everything. She is enjoying her new cot and having furniture in her room at last! Kyle loves having all his toys around him again … downstairs is covered in toys as he just keeps finding things and pulling them out … They learn a new letter in pre-school each week and then have a show and tell on the Friday for things beginning with that letter. He had a lot of fun on Thursday night searching his toys for something beginning with S … in the end he took in Sally, Sherriff, Sarge and Snotrod!

This weekend holds the next traumatic event in my NZ life …. I have to find a new hairdresser!!! I’ve been going to Fiona for so long and she knows me/my troublesome hair so well that the thought of letting someone new loose on my hair is a bit scary! Need to find someone who will put up with a screaming four year old too …. Kyle desperately needs a haircut … not looking forward to that one!

Weather has turned colder … snowing in the South Island …. just a bit colder and wetter here. We had to go out and buy some more radiators for nighttime …. getting a bit worried about the next electricity bill. I think it’s maybe a good thing that we came in the winter to be honest as we now know that we need to find a house with some form of heating when we buy in a few months. Had we come in summer we might have ended up buying something with no form of heating and regretted it.

Bobby’s Job

Jun 14, 2007 in New Zealand Actual

Bobby found out today that he’s been offered the job with the health care provider so barring the discussion around benefits etc, he will start next week … means we have to find a car quickly!

Regan is feeling a bit better and should be going back to nursery tomorrow.

Kyle went for his jags today … did you hear him scream from Scotland?? The nurse said he was a bit of a drama queen … my son? … never! Anyway, he got over it when she gave him some jelly beans … but now not looking forward to next top up in 6 weeks. Decided that I’ll take Regan and Bobby can take Kyle.
